One day I was waiting at a gate looking at markings for where to park the nose wheel of each type. There were all sorts of modern aircraft, including the 737 family, A321, MD90 and ERJ. I thought, "Wouldn't it be amazing to see a pantheon of historic aircraft pull up one after the other?"
Those simple markings inspired this 'gates of history' design, comprising groundbreaking commercial aircraft dating back to before the jet age. The aircraft are arranged by distance from aircraft nose (x=0) to nose wheel station (or tail wheel in the case of one taildragger), from the DH-106 comet (+7ft) to Concorde (+61ft).

The actual markings are based upon this Maryland DOT marking reference used at BWI, though the gate number "1" refers to JFK Terminal 7 Gate 1, the U.S. home of British Airways' Concorde.
